I took my son to his karate class and found that I wanted to be more than a spectator. By 50, I was wearing a black belt. I added a 2nd stripe before my 55th birthday, when due to hip problems, I sadly quit. Now in my 60s and with a new hip, I explore sports and wrestle with food, fitness, flexibility, and health.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger301125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30732562.post-36683284815047723582023-10-05T17:52:00.006-07:002024-03-03T17:28:29.165-08:00Table Tennis - My new competitive sport
How I started Playing Ping Pong Seriously
Like so many of you, I played ping pong as a kid on the table in the basement. I wasn't particularly good. At one of my jobs, there was a table and I played a little more intensely. And as a parent, I installed a table on the patio and played with my kids. My son and I played a lot.

On a family vacation about 12 years ago, my son and I entered the resort's ping pong tournament and to my delight. I finished 5th out of 50. But the guys in front of me were not just a little better than me, they were much better. So I asked them why. Ze answered:

"You are as good as you are going to get if you don't train".
"Train? What is this train of which you speak?" (Did I mention that we were speaking in French?)
"Yes, train, You've never trained. Obviously, you've never take a lesson."
"What do you mean it's obvious? And what sort of lesson? Like a tennis lesson?"

So when I got home, I googled Ft Lauderdale table tennis lessons, made a phone call, and booked a private lesson. It turns out in Fr Lauderdale, there is an amazing table tennis center. It's near the corner of University Blvd and Sterling Drive (more info).

And for about half the cost of a tennis lesson, I took my first private table tennis lesson. Or maybe the worst. Honestly, they're all great. In the first lesson, it turned out that the way I held the paddle needed correcting. My approach to the backhand wasn't right if I wanted to play better. Neither was my forehand. And I wasn't standing properly. Like many sports, to get better, I was told that I first need to start over and be a lot worse. But for me, it's basic training and practice which is my home field and it's fun!

My Table Tennis Status today - While the building that I live in has a table to play on, there's not many people to play with here. And it's full of really good players.

There's a rotating crowd of regulars of which about 20 show up on any given day. My ping pong has gotten really good but in this crowd, , they are mostly better than me, some are much better than me. The other DC center that I visited and played at was out in Gaitherburg MD, the Maryland Table Tennis Center. Next time I'm in Paris or London, I intend to find a place to play. Lots of room to improve. Lots of people to compete with. Great exercise. I can play inside in the air conditioning. The injury rate is low. If I get good (and I have a very long way to go), there's tons of increased levels of competition to strive for. It's social enough. And now that I'm beginning to understand the game, I can also watch it. BTW, Youtube, Instagram etc are full of table tennis feeds. Some funny. Some beautiful. Some just amazing.

Here's me playing. Most important, it's gotta be fun and keep me healthy. And no injuries.

So my mix of workouts includes some yoga, some gym, and some swimming. They are good but a little dull. Lots of ping pong which is great. I'll post on that soon too. A tiny bit of tennis (not too much since it is too likely to produce injuries given the arthritic feet and funky back that I carry around) and some cross fit.

But at this point, my main work out is the 9 Rounds: boxing-themed circuit training.
Building Pull-ups - I worked regularly over an extended period of time (a really long time!) to get to be able to do five pull-ups. BTW, most people any where near my age can’t do any pull-ups. Once I get to 5, I got ambitious and aimed at seven. And I made it there!

The first of July 1, 2023, I did seven pull-ups. Not perfect (there's lots of jerking) but also, they are not cheap partial extension ones either. I was proud: Check it out.

But then I took a trip. Spent five weeks in Europe. Ate more than a few croissants, pain au chocolate, and foie gras. On the trip, I visited a gym two times (great fun to go to a boxing gym in Paris, check it out also) but didn't do anything like a lat pulldown or pull up. On July 8th, I thought I would test and see how much I'd lost.

Result: I could only do three. I've tested two more times over the last week. Three it is. :-< That's my new max. uhg!

So lets do the numbers, I went from 7 to 3 over 5 weeks. That's a decay rate of roughly one pull-up a week. That seems to me to be a pretty fast rate of deterioration. Historically, I've found that fitness hangs in there for months and years. I remember once, not having run in a year, running a 7 minute mile. Also, I won a dare for doing pushups at one point without any recent history. But, that was then. This is now. I'm now 65 and I'm learning how the body behaves at 65. And I’m not thrilled by what I’m learning.

Maybe I should be figuring it out in percentages. That's about 15% loss per week or 57% loss over four weeks. Jeeeez. I'd better keep working out. So here’s the rule:

I'll update this as I measure myself to see how long it takes to earn it back. My guess is, with 3 pullup workouts per week, it'll take 8 weeks to get back to 7. They'll come back one every two weeks. So in eight weeks, say mid September, I should be back to seven But we'll see.

Updates:
August 14th - Rested yesterday so I tried it this morning. I definitely did 4. I almost did the 5th. I'm now optimistic that I'll be back at 5 by next week or the week after. I'm now wondering if it'll be fast, a week each, to get #4 and #5 back! That's great, why expect six or seven to take longer? Why indeed?!?

August 21st - I did five this morning. Except for last one, they were good ones. I’m pleased. My goal for next week is 5nice ones with maybe a 6th sloppy. And a week later, 6 nice ones! We’ll see, I gotta keep putting the work in.

August 29th and 31st. Six! Pretty sloppy on the 29th but I found someone to watch me on the 31st and with the adrenaline from an audience, a pretty clean 6. I’m encouraged.

So drama: will I get to seven by mid September. That gives me two weeks to add one.

here I am on Thursday, September 7th. Looks like a messy seven. Note that the extension is full and I go all the way up. But, I do kick and jerk. I'm working on it.

And if I can add one every half month, does that mean ten by Halloween?

And how much would it help if instead of weighing 202, I weighed 197? Fav part of trip for me
My wife likes to travel and wants to do it as a couple. I like to work out. Can we get organized to make both of us happy? I had a little success with this on our time in Paris but frankly, if I'd been more organized, I could have figured this out my first day there and worked out all week instead of just the last two days.

I found the Boxium. It was a 90 second walk from the apartment we were renting. It was as intense and chic a personal training facility and I've ever seen. And, considering what it was, reasonably priced.

Check out this three tone leather heavy big. I'm used to a beat-up no frills set of bags, this was not like that at all. The bags were real leather and embossed. The bike and treadmill were gorgeous wood designs, custom made in German (I wish I had more pictures).

And while hitting pads is always great, it's even more fun in a ring where I need to work situational awareness to stay out of the corners. I'm now 65 years of age.

That means I'm starting my 66th trip about the sun. Very excited about it. My birthday (I'm Pisces) comes near the end of winter. Of course, since I live in Florida and don't think astrologically, that previous sentence was a little random. But despite being 65, I'm still sort of "with it". Evidence: the use of the "a little random" expression.

I'm taking a gap year. This means that John Edelson, as of March 1st, no longer has a job. He resigned his employment and is not applying for, and will not accept, any employment. At least for a year. I had a great job. I was thrilled and interested by it, I found it meaningful. But I was starting my 20th year running that place and for reasons of personal growth and exploration, and given that there is a limited lifespan on this earth, I decided that they could get along fine without me. But, how I do feel about having no fixed schedule or responsibilities or role? It's hard for me. It's going to take some getting use e to. Near the end of 2023, I'll take a fresh look at my plan but for now, I intend to be relaxed, social, and dabble in all sorts of things.

My health is good. I'm exercising every day. I play ping pong intensely and try to do that several times a week. I play tennis once a week. I yoga a few times. I go to the gym. I've joined a circuit training gym with a boxing theme: 9 Rounds (which I highly recommend! Two great trainers: JP and Olga)! It's fun to have gloves on again. And they have a speed bag. I LOVE the speed bag. I also swim, go to the gym, and go to Jeff's BootCamps on Saturdays at 10:30 and Thursdays at 5:30.

Summer Camp. Starting around May 1st, I decided to make exercising and physical activity what I do. I try to do two, sometimes three of these activities daily. Yesterday for instance, I went to 9 Rounds (which has a speed bag!), played 90 minutes of pong at the center, and went to Jeff's BootCamp. Ok, that was a bit much. This will get interrupted when we take our July trip but in August, I'll make a new plan.

Here's my status...

My weight was a little out of control this winter getting up near 210. I'm working it back down and am hanging out around 202. Ideally (and realistically), I'd like to be between 195 and 200.

Pushups. I'm able again to do 25 pushups without stopping. I'd like to get to be able to do four sets of 25 with just short breaks in the middle.

Pull Ups. I'm back to doing five of them. My target over the last year was to get back to 5. A few times I've done 6 and I've just finally made it to 7 (but about to take a month off...). My goal is to get back to 10.

Jump rope. I'm back to doing sets of 50. I can also do a set of 100 but it leaves me excellent.

Running. Haven't tried in awhile. No aspirations here.

Swimming. I'm back to doing sets of 20 or 30 but not without stopping. Today, for instance, I did 24 as 6 sets of 4 with a half minute in between.

Yoga. I'd like to be a competent yogi who understands alignment and is limber enough to hit most of the postures. I'm getting there.

I July, I'm taking a month long vacation in which I'll not only not exercise, I'll also eat like I don't know better. I won't be on any podiums but I might this summer be in shape to actually do another sprint.

I've focused entirely on my jogging. I try to do my walk for 1.5 miles, jog1.5 miles routine at least once a week. Sometimes twice. It leaves my legs very stiff the following day so I shouldn't really do it the day before any tennis because I'll just be useless on the courts.

I've been slowly working my times down so that now I'm under 10 minute miles. By under, I mean 9:55. Still, it's progress. Here's my numbers from this week. Soon, I'll get back to biking and swimming. My strategy is not to focus on making a good time. it's simply to be in good enough shape so I'm sure that I can actually swim the quarter mile, bike the 20K, and jog the 5K without drowning, crashing, or walking, respectively.

PS - I'm still working on my rubiks cube in plank plan but while I haven't really regressed, I haven't progressed very much either. I think it got a lot worse with a mysterious bout of something in Nov 2019 which was a sort of deep bronchitis. I got two chest xrays during that bout but nobody really figured out why I was so so sick. I did test negative in the spring of 2020 for covid antibodies so the timing and test make covid seem unlikely. Still....

Specifics on the lack of cardio. When I try to swim a few lengths, I feel weak after about 4 or 5. My tennis is marked by mistakes which are often from a stumble, a weak grip on the racquet, or other signs of fatigue. My recovery time after an intense point conspicuously slows up games. And when I try to jog, I feel dangerously out of breath and energy after 20 yards. I mean like I'm huffing and puffing, my eyes are bulging, and I feel weak. At the start of 2020, I was with a pack of my college friends who noticed as we hiked around Marin County that I was constantly out of breath. They insisted that I get a full work up which I did.

Tests show Nothing, Maybe I'm Deconditioned? The GP, cardiologist, and pulmonary doctors did an array of heart and lung tests and said I was fine. The best they could come up with was a diagnosis, based on the history and without actually seeing it, of exercise-induced asthma. So I got and used for six months an inhaler: It didn’t seem to make much difference.

What do I think? I had a lot about the weird bronchitis sickness episode in November 2019. Never really diagnosed, I’ve often thought it left me physically reduced. Or maybe, this being my first time getting old, is what getting old is like. I just didn’t know but I felt something was wrong so I did NOT embark on an intense rehab program feeling I would wait it out. Or maybe I didn’t start working hard because I’m lazy. But through all of 2020 and most of 2021, I continued to periodically test my cardio either implicitly by playing tennis or explicitly, by trying some jogs. The result was always the same: Huffing and puffing like a steam engine about to explode within a minute.

Surprise. I'm back! Today, having put on a few pounds (I dropped from 208 in January to 190 in November), I decided to start exercise walking regularly. I hustled and walked two miles at a ~3.5 mph pace and felt pretty good so when I turned around, I decided to do a super slow jog and see if I could keep it up for a 100 yards.

Surprise!!! I jogged back an entire two miles. Slow but steady. 12-minute pace. How? What changed? How is this possible?

1. My personal belief. Something righted itself. Whatever was wrong with me, perhaps in my lungs from the Nov 2019 bout, has now righted itself. From reading the web, my symptoms match that of long tail Covid and I did test positive for having had Covid before April 2020. But I had a lung X-ray and the telltail signs of lung issues indicating long tail Covid were not detected. I have tried to learn about this on the web searching against terms like: long tail covid, fatigue, exercise etc. I've encountered new acronym words like POTS, FACIT, PASC, and CPET but frankly, it's a swamp of info that I'm lost in.

2. My wife Carmen’s thought: it’s the weight. 195 is far from 205 and that ten pounds makes all the difference. Could it be that simple? Btw, my key strategy to losing the weight: Stop Eating! I didn't change my exercise routine much. I mostly skipped meals and tried to drink tons of water and a fair
amount of coffee. (Please don't ask me to sit in a meeting for a full
hour.) In addition to eating much less, I went Adkins / South Beachie / Keto and stopped with all desserts and starches. I continued to eat lots of vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, and cheese. I went low on fruit. NO on beer and mixers. And I'm not sure what to do about yogurt.

More facts: the last two weeks, I’ve been playing tennis much much better. As I think about it, my bad tennis performance the last few years might entirely be from the weird limited cardio that has be exhausted whenever I made a sustained concerted effort.

Here’s my Strava from today. I jogged at a rate of ~12 minute miles, maybe 5 mph. Still slow but dramatically different from not being able to jog.

Now I could be wrong and perhaps nothing had changed. Maybe today was different because I jogged super slow. Maybe the other days I was aiming at doing better than twelve minute miles. I suppose I could (and should) check all my old Strava records to see. But the fact is today I did accelerate for a few patches but I did not get that that total overloaded exhaustion feeling.

Next, I’ll try biking or swimming tomorrow and see if the limits that I have been living with are gone!

Wouldn’t that been great? If so, triathalons, here I came!!! (Only sprints but still!). Can I go back to a boxing gym and not be ridiculous? It would be fun. And I've always wanted to learn some BJJ. I'm only 63, why not?

Johnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13718512952931566226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30732562.post-17310992318285361842021-05-04T09:21:00.008-07:002021-05-04T09:26:36.538-07:00Health Report: May 2021
Using the metrics set up in the last post, here's an update:

Fitness. I made it to 6 pullups but it's been up and down (ha ha ha). As in once I declared victory with 5 pull-ups in late Feb, I stopped until mid April when I was back down to only 3 and a bit. I started building again and yesterday I did 6. My pushups of two sets of 25 are holding steady. I want to get to yoga more but haven't yet figured out how to do more than the inhouse session on Sat mornings.

Weight. For almost a month, I was steadily under 200 but the last weeks, I've been back at 201-203. This week I'm crunching it back down. Just don't eat all that yummy stuff, no more bread!!! I'm certainly doing better than at the end of last year when I was up close to 210 but I've also lost my momentum of losing weight. My goal remains to be between 190 and 195.

Weight YTD 2021. I'm thinking about metrics.

I've recently spent a fair amount of time playing with my new toy, a Renpho scale. It automatically records my weight (bluetooth to phone) along with all sorts of other data.

At the risk of over-sharing, here's some screen shots and a picture. Of course, one reason that I'm sharing this is that my target for the end of February was to weigh under 200. While the top picture from today shows me over, it doesn't totally count since I'm holding the camera which apparently weighs one pound. I did manage to weigh in this morning at 199.8 which you can see in the next pictures which has have my weight and other metrics plus my weight charted over the last month or so. Sort of a victory....

This next shot is not faked. It is the only time this year so far when I weighed in at less than 200 but it did really happen so I'm declaring victory (and I didn't do anything to hit the weigh-in other than weigh myself in the morning before eating or drinking).. :->

You might notice above that in addition to my weight, there's tons of other data. This data is no more or less consistent over time than my weight so it's maybe sort of accurate, maybe it's not. But it does have me thinking about how much I like having some control and useful information about my own data.

I worked with a trainer for years who would at intervals, take measurements (weight, BMI, muscle mass etc) and even pictures (same pose over and over again I guess showing bulges of fat and accumulation of muscle ) but it was more annoying to me than motivating. She would read the data to me but never produced a report for me to have. It seemed like such a wasted opportunity to have those records but for me not to have access them.

I'm thinking a lot about this since I'm getting to an age when I would like to have some trend records of my health that I could look at and use for motivation. I imagine they should be:

- weight
- waist measurement
- fat vs muscle mass
- pulse

- heart pressure

- some cholesterol measures

- average daily calorie consumption (this could come from MyFitness Pal or something)
- some performance measures for aerobic exercise - not sure what these would be but it might have to do with my time on a mile or quarter mile or something.
- some performance measures for muscle exercise - I can do 5 pullups and 30 pushups, see videos below) but it might be how long a person can plank.

- some flexibility measures like whether I can reach by feet or something

Other metrics that I have:

My race records
MyFitnessPal has some eating and other records. I wonder if they give average calorie consumption for the time when I was entering all my food?
Strava and MotionX-GPS have lots of my biking, running, and walking records including how much I go out and what my average pace and distance is.

Here's my vision. I'd like to have a set of records defined as to how a person can measure their health in the later declining years (starting at 40 or something) with a focus on metrics that people can train to improve. I know that a lot of focus recently has gone into the counting of steps everyday and maybe that would be something to add to the list: a measure of generally how much I am moving each February.

Has anyone seen anything like this? I'd like to know. Please comment below or email me at bbat50@ gmail.com

thanks

Performance metrics - Here's the guy who at 50 was doing four sets of 25 pushups as a regular training exercise. Without much special training, it turns out I can still grind out 30.

In the same vein, in late January, I decided to start training on push-ups to see if I could get to five clean pullups by the end of February. When I started training in January, I was at 0.5 pullups as my maximum capacity. I hit the gym every two to three says (sometime four) with a narrow focus on pull-ups. I was advised to do negative pullups (start with the chin above the bar and as slowly as possible go down), assisted pull-ups (big rubber band between my feet and bar to make them easier), and to put weights on my legs to make pull-ups harder. This was confusing since they seem to be different directions but apparently, they are all ways to squeeze a little out a little more muscle exhaustion which will help build capacity. Who knew? In any case, I made it to five. Here it is. I'm having fun with this so now I'm aiming at 10 by my older brother's birthday (In about two months)

I stopped jogging due to hip and back problems. It was either 2015 or 16. In 2014, I was doing lots of tris. My last martial arts class was Feb 2013.

In Jan of 2018, I got a new hip which seems to have solved my back problems. During 2019, I tried with some success to get back in shape and while I did make progress on my weight and in other areas, every jog left me weirdly breathless.

Convinced something was wrong, I got a full heart and lung workup in Feb and March 2020 only to learn that I'm fine. So in March and April, I started doing faster walks with intermittent jogs. I steadily increased the distance working through the feeling of panic and exhaustion that I hit in the first two minutes of a jog. Let me say that despite my athletic background, the "wall" of exhaustion is just as terrible (if not terrorizing) for me as anybody with no athletic background. Comebacks, getting in shape, is hard. Respect it!

Last week, I jogged a solid mile at a ten minute pace. Then I walked for a mile. Then I jogged another mile home! That was Thursday. On Friday, I did the same thing. Today is Sunday, same thing!

It's for real, I can jog a mile. Not to be too literal or too metaphoric but I consider that a major life milestone for me! I'm as proud of being able to run a mile in my 60s is I am having finished a marathon in my late 20s (I was a tag-along in Boston in 1986. 3:20!).

I track my training on Strava and I just found that I can share my training record.

Dares't I articulate my training goals for 2020?
- Be able to jog a 5K
- Up my standard swim from 2 x 10 laps to 2 x 20 or 25
- Do a triathalon sprint without walking on the run
- Play tennis and set up some regular games

- Get back to being able to do 4 x 20 pushups and 5 pullups
- Weight under 200 all the time.
- Should I try some martial arts? I badly miss it. I've always wondered about jiu jitsu. Should I try five private lessons?
- Stay healthy with sensible goals, massage, stretching, and yoga.

I've had good discipline in my eating reducing both consumption and particularly staying away from carbs and desert. Not quite enough to hit kitosis but I'm pretty close.

Every Sunday is weigh in day. First thing in the morning (when I'm at my lightest). Today's maximum was 204 and I cleared it by a full pound. <span style="background-color: #fff3db; color: #29303b; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.87px;">Here's <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vR2nAa93HV3oZKmdOVzGJ7BT3wuNMY1F41-1Zoumr0kWCwTJhnXgnd-aYsSVCvhS7InN3SzXwZztqz1/pubhtml" style="background-color: #fff3db; color: #956839; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", sans-serif; font-size: 12.87px;">my tracking<span style="background-color: #fff3db; color: #29303b; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.87px;">. And for those who don't know, I'm on a lose-a-pound a week tear aiming to clear 200 by 3/1 (I got as high as 215 for awhile there: Ouch!).

How? I'm obsessing about it. I try to think about what I'm eating tomorrow every night in bed. I also plan out my exercise. Also, coming back from surgery really gives me motivation. Here's some visuals:

The first one is from me biking this morning after I got a flat and called for a ride. (If I was hard core, I would have done the roadside repair thing but....without my reading glasses, it's hard to see all those little things that need to be done to repair a flat. LMAO)
For two weeks, I had a rehab PT guy come to my house and show me the basics.

When I visited by doctor, he said that rehab for "people in my category" (I assume he meant pretty young and healthy and aggressive about getting back in shape), there's no data that demonstrates attending formal rehab improves outcomes over not attending. So I opted not to attend.

My major focus now is not hurting my hip as it solidifies and on getting back in shape. My measurement of being in shape is reducing my horrific belly and weight (I saw 215 a number of times on the scale in December).

My goal simply is to lose a pound a week until my birthday so that I'm under 200 at the start of March.

Here's my tracking.

BTW, I read all the articles about how hard it is to exercise away weight and that weight, at my age, is lost by controlling diet, nothing else. So I'm doing both.

Exercise: Lots of swimming (but only kicking a little. I use a pool buoy between my legs to keep me from over doing anything with my legs). Some weights a few times a week. And today I introduced walking. I walked for over a mile and only made it 2.3 miles. I guess I need to pick up the pace. I think a 3 mile/hour pace is appropriate for exercise.Johnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01573208587118088567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30732562.post-74321846576226719882018-12-18T17:44:00.001-08:002023-09-27T14:23:16.440-07:00Bionic!Here's the news. On 12/11/2018, last Tuesday, of my own free will, I drove to the hospital, got totally undressed, signed some papers, and let them pump me full of a cocktail of muscle relaxants, pain killers, and sedatives.

Then, with a sharp knife they sliced open my thigh.

With a reciprocating saw, they cut thru my thigh bone.

With a hammer, chisel, and plyers, they broke out the ball from the hip ball and socket and pulled it out.

They then took a powerful power sander and polished up the inside of the socket slicing off the bone spurs and cleaning up the narley part that wrecks the spherical shape.

Then they jammed into the sock the strangest looking device made of titanium, plastic, and ceramic.

Basically, they jammed (hammered) a cup my hip socket and then jammed a ceramic ball with an attached metal rod into the thigh bone at one end, the newly placed cup in the other.

Once in place, they cleaned up the mess that they'd made being sure not to leave any bone chips or other evidence around, pushed all the muscles and stuff back into position, and glued the incision back together.

Then they high fived each other, stopped for a coffee break and a chat, and moved onto the fourth hip replacement of the day.

Amazing!

Later that day, they watched me take ten steps in one direction with a walker. Turn around. Walk back.

The next day, they took me to a little room to see if I could climb and descend a few stairs, sit down and get up from a fake car, and otherwise move about. They also checked that I could pee. Then they send me home.

So far so good....This is what being healthy but needing a new hip at age 60 looks like.

Want to know more?
https://www.bbat50.com/2019/01/rehab-postop-following-new-hip.html
https://www.bbat50.com/2019/02/driving-back-to-fitness-feb-2019.html
Johnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01573208587118088567noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30732562.post-79490416709024050292018-11-01T14:47:00.000-07:002019-02-10T14:48:35.960-08:00Of Gis, Equipment, and Retiring from the Martial Arts<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

No kick boxing, just classic boxing.

I've watched these rounds a number of times and I think it's a fantastic father son portrait. My son is about 3x times faster than I am.

He chases me around and I mostly roll with the punches, move away or block the punches coming in, and I sometimes even counter. My footwork is good. But he's just fantastically athletic, quick, and graceful as he throws. #dadissoproud Note: neither of has put any time into boxing in the previous year or so: This is us at our sloppiest. But since it's only going to get worse for me, I thought I'd save this.

The great news is that I held up OK for three, four, or five rounds (however many it was. I guess I did get a little fuzzy) and I COULD WALK THE NEXT DAY (after some icing and time in the jacuzzi)... OK, now here it is... Watch how he zings and how I drag....

Anybody notice how fast he is? Good technique. And how he stayed away from knocking off his father's noggin which I really appreciated. This is what I looked like between rounds (while he was shadow boxing or talking up the audience):
Where were we? We were at Ace's new gym just off Commercial, just west of Powerline. She opened it a few weeks ago. I highly recommend it for fitness, boxing skills, some time in the ring (she should get the ring installed in the next few weeks and will get the place expanded as the other tenant gives up space), and camaraderie.
This GIF is of me boxing in virtual reality. It was more than a little awkward because the other boxer was crowding me and I couldn't use my footwork to get away from him. It made me use an inside game which is not my strength. In any case, enjoy the spectacle of virtual reality boxing.

I'll do it since I want it.

It's now a little more than two weeks and I feel great. I haven't missed yet and it's carried a few benefits with it.

Continuity allows me to focus on improvement. So I've upped my game all around:

The gym. I use to go to warm up with 5 minutes of rowing, do the weights, and done. I've decided to add cardio to each visit so I'm up to 10 minutes of rowing at the start, weights, then 10 of stair climber and 10 of elliptical. I'm both increasing the intensity of them and would like to make it to 30 minutes of cardio at the end.

Biking. I'm up from my 13 mile ride to a solid 20.

Swimming. The biggest change. I was doing batches of two or four lengths and working towards getting 20 done in a work out. I pushed hard and am now working with batches mostly of 10, sometimes 5, and have done several 30 length workouts. I'm also timing this so I started when the pool opens at 8 so I'm done by 8:30 and in the office around 9:15.

Nicole and Focus Studio. I see her 2x a week working on building the stuff (intrinsics, posture, certain stretches) which will help with my managing my back problems. I was showing up at the hour and not being that intense. I've stepped this up to showing up early so I can do the warm up before the hour begins.

Nutrition. I'm indulging my focus on the scale. I step on it a lot. I like to see how my weight varies during a day and a week. I can move up or down by five pounds in a day. I've decided, starting Jan 1, to drop sugar and alcohol from my diet (almost entirely) until I see less than 200 pounds consistently on the scale. I did have one drink with DJ to celebrate him being alive and out and about adn tonight, going out, I might try one too but mostly, I've been nutty good about eating this year. I have big size sugar-free yogurt which I mix with nuts (no salt!) and blue berries as my go-to snack and light dinner.

To lay it out there, here's the goal. Get below 200 in January and stay there all year. I'd like to range between 194 and 199 for Feb through December. Actually, I'd love to average 190 and it was only a few years ago that I was there but without the 4-5x thrill of a martial arts workout and people to live with who are also actively health conscious, this takes more discipline and sacrifice than I'm likely to make.

PS. I'm also trying to get in shape to ski with my son in early February. Vail.
PPS. My doctor retired and I need a new GP.
I started it a decade ago when I was 48 when I was training for my first black belt and now, I'm only 13 months from being 60! It's time for a little reflection on the fitness and health big picture. Partially because it's the start of a new year. Happy 2017 to all!

How am I doing? Well, not as well as I would like. I have some serious challenges and the objective data is that I'm messing. As background, I had to give up karate in 2013-14 since my hip stiffened up so much that I couldn't kick and my recurring back problems were being aggravated by it and made training regularly nearly impossible. Karate for me had meant intense training sessions 3-4 per week along with strength, flexibility, and cardio training. Mostly, my weight took care of itself back then.

I then had a reasonably good two years of triathalons, boxing, swimming, and tennis.

But 2016 has been a tough one with a series of back spasms and recoveries that have left me unable to train regularly and generally, having trouble getting the activity I need to feel good and remain fit. However, December went well so the year finished strong leaving me optimistic about 2017 despite the obvious problems.

Obvious problem, the elephant in the room. I just bought my first pair of 36" waist pants since the mid to late 1990s. Since I started to manage my health around 1998, I've mostly been at a 34" waist except for the glory years of a 32" waist: 2003-2005. My weight too has recently peaked at a terrifying 210 but I am determined and optimistic. I'm now on a tear with fifteen straight days of
exercising and so far this morning, I've ignored the amazing array of chocolate cakes half-eaten in the kitchen and instead, I breakfasted on cold turkey and coffee. (It’s t he holidays, we don't usually have such deserts in the house).

What am I doing about it?

I'm making a bigger effort this year to now just eat well most of the time (which I do) but to lower the number of binges from weekly to maybe monthly. Binges usually take the form of a big dinner out with multiple courses and desert. I'm trying to switch on these occasions from just ordering what I want (usually a ribeye steak) to something more reasonable (perhaps a salad with flank steak on it, no dressing).

The most regular thing has been a biweekly personal training session with Nicole of Focus Studio on Floranda near Dixie Highway but during the year, I've always rotated among my own time at the gym, swimming laps, and biking.
Mohammed Ali was and is the greatest. I've been a fan of his for a long time watching the films and reading the books. Here's my martial arts bookshelf from a few years ago (it's moved forward since then) which featured two books about Ali: King of the World<span style="background-color: #fff3db; color: #29303b; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.87px;"> and What's my Name, Fool<span style="background-color: #fff3db; color: #29303b; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.87px;">?.

A kid in Louisville who discovers boxing, an Olympic Gold Medal champion who is the All American kid, the professional boxer who is original and fast and beautiful, the personality and promoter, the striving identity when he adopts the Mohammed Ali name and beliefs, the twists and turns of alliances with Malcolm X and others within the Black Muslim movement, the incredibly principled political statement made by going to jail for over 3 years for refusing to go fight in Viet Nam, the years of comebacks and wins against both age and incredible fighters, the incomprehensible ability to absorb pain and to keep fighting, the astounding fights around the world, and then the long sunset as a legend and icon as his body and control disappears.

And of course, he was a human like the rest of us with eras, inconsistencies, vanity, evolution, some cheating, and some luck.

He was the Greatest. And the young Billy Crystal wasn't too bad either. Here's Billy Crystal presenting Mohammed Ali in 15 rounds.

Life and history does not get more interesting than this. If Gods walk among us than he was surely one of them. Truth is stranger than fiction. And good biographies are among the best entertainment and study.

Here's a collection of training videos, first ones of son David (age 17) who is starting to learn to box. He's being trained by Ace (<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18.6px; text-indent: 2px; white-space: pre;">Ada Velez, a retired national boxing champion) over at Kimling Academy.

Then for contrast, there are some videos of me (his dad) of boxing training videos from 2012 or 2013 when I was working out at Lavallees (I was in my mid 50s at that point). They aren't sparing, they're just working on some basics which I had on my phone so I thought I'd post them.

Below are some pretty low key training videos which just remind me what those days were like. A few years later, I started playing around with boxing (since my hip had frozen up and I could no longer kick or do any of the karate stuff). Heres a look at what I look like in the ring in a very low key training session.
The next drill is that little trick of dropping the head to catch a shot on the forehead instead of the face.
Those who know me often ask about my back.

The answer is, my back is much better but it's an ongoing battle to manage and care for it.

One part of this is that I am careful not to sit for more than an hour at a time. If I'm working, I just stand-up and keep working with my nifty stand-up desk.

This year, my back is sore but no problems. Of course, it's only March. I've skied and biked and swam a lot. I'm hoping to go do tri sprints again this summer but this means that I need to start running again. I've run about a mile and a half three times this year and each one took a lot more than I expected and left me pretty sore for most of a week.

My last real back spasm was in Sept 2015 when, feeling pretty good in the morning, I did some squats but for some reason, I did it while holding my little dog over and in front of my head. This turns out to be really stressful on the back and it triggered a pretty bad spasm. That spasm was the day of the SOFL Edcamp which I managed to get thru by using the back brace and some drugs.

A bigger spasm was in March 2015 when Carmen was in Cuba. I triggered it by playing way too much tennis on a Sunday and then, when I tried to do situps on Tuesday am, my back when into a full spasm making it almost impossible to get off the floor or move. This one took about two weeks in the back brace before I could move again.

So that's the status, I'm writing this both to promote the standing desk and also, I'm trying to keep better records about my back status. So, to help me keep track, I'm listing the previous posts on this topic.
Ok, I did make that up but I still believe it.

Here's me, coming out of retirement, and trying to revive the old "eat an apple while juggling routine."

For those of you who want to know what happened. it turns out that I had forgotten to swallow so I started to choke. Once I realized what was happening, I remembered that I use to have ghis same problem back in the 70s when I use to perform this trick. Here I am, 40 years older, and I'm still forgetting to chew and swallow. Cracked me up! Practically make me choke to death.

Here's me son trying to do his first ever "apple-while-juggling". I'm sure he'll master it soon.

And looking back, here's another juggling video of us from 2013

Johnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01573208587118088567noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30732562.post-64555693856091863622015-12-25T18:01:00.001-08:002015-12-25T18:04:09.021-08:00Swimming to stay in shapeI've been swimming as a way to stay in shape which is not that likely to lead to injuries. And being in South Florida, I can swim outside 12 months a year! I've even thought of putting a harness onto my home pool so I can train there (my home pool is too small to get much practice.
So now I'm trying to improve my stroke. I had myself videoed, what do you think? I think that I should learn to kick properly:

Here's another video of my stroke from October. I was at my least in shape at that point. I look at this video often to give myself motivation.
